A little note to my younger self as a first time Mum

Dear Sarah,

Oh my younger self you are so amazing. You’ve already been through baby loss and given birth to our beautiful boy at home. You are stronger than you know, I wish you could realise that. I want to give you a really important piece of advice, though I know you find it hard to listen, I know you want to do this your way, keep at it!

So here goes… Please try to stop feeling guilty!

I know you feel guilty for so many things, you always worry if you’re doing the right thing but believe me when I say you ARE! You’ve got this all covered, every decision you make, every single one, is the right one for our family.

Stop feeling guilty for being a bit lazy at times because you’re not! You’re healing from your birth, you’re learning to breastfeed, you’re learning to be a Mum. Embrace this time together, you’re getting to know each other. Never again will you be able to get dressed when you like, stay at home because it’s raining or just think about your own food! One day you’ll have more children to look after, they’ll be hungry all day long and there will be school runs to do no matter the weather. So there’s no need to feel guilt about not going to all the groups, for staying cosy at home or spending the day in your pj’s. This is your time, your time with your little boy. Enjoy those lazy days of just you and him, his belly full of breastmilk, yours full of tea and cake!

I also know you feel guilty for not earning anymore, for giving up work to be a stay at home Mum. I know you loved your job and the people you worked with, I know you liked to share the bills. I want you to know that there is no need to feel guilty for this, you have made exactly the right decision for YOU! It will be the best decision you ever made and though you have no idea where this will take you just yet believe me when I tell you it will be just perfect. It’s hard right now, really hard. You’ve looked at every bill, you’ve cut out everything you possibly can and reduced your outgoings to make this work. Trust me when I say it won’t always be this way. I know you think it will! Honestly it won’t. One day you’ll have more than enough, you’ll be able to book holidays again and buy new clothes. You’ll even buy a house one day! Without realising it this time in your life is actually setting you up for the rest of your life. You will learn what matters, you will save money, you will appreciate what means the most to you. One day you’ll be able to relax a little and times won’t be so difficult but you’ll remember this time fondly. A time that forced you to slow down and take stock of your life. So stop feeling guilty for doing the thing that makes you happiest, it was absolutely the right decision for you!

Believe in yourself. Believe in your decisions and trust that each and every one is the right decision for YOU. An amazing and busy life awaits you. For now rest as much as you can and enjoy him!

Have you heard of The Kindness Elves? They joined us last December and I can’t wait to tell you all about them in the run up to Christmas. My boys loved them and I’m hoping April will join in this year. We’re already looking forward to their return!
